We made the drive out of Rome (somehow) to the hill town of Calitri in the rain and fog yesterday. Nice from a distance - but not a restaurant or hotel were open. this was another Househunters International Hot Spot if you watch HGTV. Uh, I don't think so! The interior of this part of italy needs a facelift! We spent the night in nearby Avellino, moved to plan B, and headed for the Amalfi coast (thanks Jayne). Tonight we are in lovely Positano. Our hotelier hooked us up with a local family who earn their living taking tourists to their home and feeding them a traditional multi-course Italian meal. This, so far, was one of our most memorable nights. Incredible food, bottomless wine, great desserts, limoncello. What more could you ask for!
The Amalfi coast is amazing. A very narrow road winds around the lemon groves and little towns carved into the cliffs. The pottery and ceramics from this area are very beautiful but also very expensive. I can only imagine how crazy that road gets in the summer with the hordes of mopeds buzzing around.
We'll continue around the Amalfi coast tomorrow and eventually head for Pompei.
