Mt Nebo, Jordan

November 4, 2010

Mt Nebo holds special religious importance for many believers as it is thought to be the place of several significant biblical events. The bible states the following regarding the mountain,"And Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho." (Deuteronomy 34:1). The Bible later implies that from this mountain God gave Moses his first view of the promise land. It is believed that God himself buried the prophet Moses here. Perhaps because I am Christian, I feel it appropriate that I am able to make joke here. It’s not that Jordan is ugly, per say, but the promise land didn’t look all that promising. It’s a desert landscape that receives less than 200mm of rain a year! I mean if someone pointed me towards the Caribbean and implied that that was my promise land; I might be willing to wonder the desert a few years in exchange. All the backpackers had to throw our little jabs in at this point because despite the historical significance of the mountain, there was nothing here. Nada. Even the small church they were attempting to restore was closed. One really had to use their imagination to get the full effect of the site.
